July 21 | Respond Humbly

July 21, 2017

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the Lord, but only from the physicians.

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Asa did not end well. God rebuked Asa after he foolishly aligned with neighboring countries. But there was still hope. Asa could’ve humbled himself before God. But he didn’t. Instead, he threw the prophet in jail and abused the people. Even in the final years of his life, God sought Asa’s heart by allowing him to contract a disease in his feet. But his heart was unyielding. Eventually, Asa died with his heart still rebellious toward God. Even though Asa started well, his pride led him down a road of destruction and isolation.

This unfortunate story is all too possible for us. None of us are exempt from a proud and calloused heart. This is especially true for those who exist in authorities over others. Successful kings don’t like being rebuked by prophets. Managers don’t like being rebuked by employees. Parents don’t like being rebuked by children. Our pride can keep us from hearing God’s call to surrender and submit to him. However, dependence upon God is the very life-source we so deeply need.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Let’s not forget that God is the source of life especially as he allows us to experience success and authority. And if God desires to correct and transform our character, we should respond with humility and surrender. As you begin your day, is there an area of your life God is calling you to surrender to him?  If so, pray a prayer of commitment to him. Ask him to give you a soft heart to follow and always depend on him.
