August 9 | Radical Repentance

August 9, 2017

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I have spoken against this place and its people … I also have heard you, declares the Lord.

Read the entire passage: 2 Kings 22.19

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Josiah is crushed when he hears the Law for the first time. So heart-broken over the sin of Israel, he tears his robe in grief. This is very rare for a king. He sees the gravity of sin in the eyes of God. He isn’t just sorry but takes action to do away with all worship of foreign gods in Israel.

Sin is a heart issue of turning away from God. When Josiah tears his robe, he’s grieving over his sin. He shows us just being sorry isn’t enough. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn [over their sins and repent], for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5.4) God is grieved by our sin and looks at our hearts to see if we’re grieved by it. Radical repentance is when we agree with God about our sin—and are saddened.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Jesus paid the debt for your sins on the cross. If you’ve accepted that, God accepts you as his eternal child (John 1.12). Even so, Jesus followers still struggle with sin. Memorize David’s words in Psalm 51.4 and recognize you’ve hurt God when you choose to turn away. Then ask him to help you change.
