August 10 | God’s Renovation

August 10, 2017

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.

Read the entire passage: 2 Kings 23.4-20

TODAY’S MESSAGE

When Josiah heard the Law and repented, he went into action. Israel needed more than a few tweaks to get things right. He removed all evidence of idol worship in Judah, burning and grinding them to dust. Priests officiating idol worship were “out.” He destroyed foreign artifacts of worship put in place by kings from Manasseh clear back to Solomon. He renewed the covenant with God (2 Kings 23.3) and reinstituted the Passover celebration and singular worship.

Grace was the power behind Josiah’s effort. He didn’t purge the land to earn God’s favor but acted out of gratitude for God’s mercy (2 Kings 22.20). Properly understood, grace should lead to significant effort and renovation. Your reaction should be as thorough as Josiah’s when you accept God’s saving grace through Jesus. Guest speaker Kevin Harney encouraged us to destroy those things in our lives that pull us back into sin.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

God wants to do some renovations in our lives to give us life to the fullest (John 10.10). As you meet with him today, consider that one thing you know you need to purge—a TV show, the neighborhood coffee gossip-fest or a certain habit. Renew your commitment to God and ask him for help.
