TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

TODAY’S MESSAGE

A significant challenge we face in our culture is falling deeply in love with God and not our possessions. This challenge is not new. The Apostle Paul coached Timothy to help his congregation in Ephesus overcome this same challenge. Paul’s words above are strong and leave no room for debate. The tension we must skillfully navigate is hoping in God while feeling free to enjoy his gifts to us.

In his book Satisfied, Senior Pastor Jeff Manion writes, ““To put our hope in wealth is to depend upon it as our ultimate source of security. Only God should occupy this treasured position in our lives.” This thought can be incredibly liberating. It is possible to enjoy our homes, careers, clothing, smart phones and vacations without putting our hope in them. We can appreciate them but not depend on them for our happiness, purpose or identity. To hope in God is to know it is not what I buy—but who bought me.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Today, highlight the things you enjoy. Whether it be a leisurely Saturday morning breakfast with your family, walking a wooded trail, sitting at your lakeside cottage or enjoying a treasured possession—take some time to recognize it as a good gift and give God thanks.
