August 28, 2017

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.

Read the entire passage: 2 John 1-6

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Everything we have is from God. And God designed every good gift to lead us back to him. He gives gifts of rain, crops, food and joy to point back to him. Gifts of financial security and rest so we might respond to him in gratitude and trust. The general revelations of God’s generosity are designed to lead us to more specific revelations. The most specific being Jesus Christ.

Jesus, God in the flesh, is the explosion of God’s love upon the world. In Jesus, we learn the heart of God in a way we never could before. In Jesus, we also experience the pinnacle of the God’s generosity. He gives us his own Son so we might come back into relationship with him.

We find in Jesus three aspects of God’s generosity toward us—grace, mercy and peace. We often think of grace and mercy as two sides of the same coin. Grace is getting what we don’t deserve, such as an undeserved gift. Meanwhile, mercy is not getting what we do deserve. It is like withholding punishment that is rightfully due. Peace is that inner experience of trust, knowing God is in control. These three gifts from God come in the person of Jesus Christ and are designed to lead us back home to God.
