TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4

Read: Philippians 2:3–4

Listen: Philippians 2

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Paul knew the church in Philippi would have to learn a new way of living to succeed. They would have to replace pride with humility. A pride-focused congregation had the potential to destroy this fledgling Jesus community. Senior Pastor Jeff Manion reminds us in the video clip below that pride would have to be replaced by humility. Good movement pushes out bad movement.

In his book Humilitas–A Key to Life, Love, and Leadership, John Dickson (who will be speaking at Ada Bible in a few weeks) defines humility as “the noble choice to forgo your status, deploy your resources or use your influence for the good of others before yourself…a humble person is marked by a willingness to hold power in service of others.” It is not about us (which is pride). It is about them.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

In your Chair time today, identify one area in your life where good movement needs to replace bad movement or where humility needs to replace pride. Write that area in your journal on page 20 and then offer a prayer to God asking for his help to make this replacement.
