TODAY’S MESSAGE
We open this week right where we left off last week. Philippi is a church in crisis. This young group of Jesus-followers is not getting along. In fact, the church is rapidly developing a reputation for being self-absorbed, conceited and uninterested in serving others. The conflict on the inside of the church is escalating and spilling into the community. Paul is concerned that without correction this will affect the credibility of the gospel. While the Jesus Way is selfless, humble and generous, the Philippians are in danger of being known more for their culture of conflict than spreading the message and way of Jesus. The Philippians need to learn a new song based in humility rather than pride.
This week we listen in, Paul teaches the Philippian congregation a new song found in Philippians 2:5–11. He is optimistic this will help them, and us, to learn to get along with others when they don’t share our beliefs, values or personal preferences. Paul pleads with the church to set aside their differences and begin to care for the needs of others in their community. Paul sets a powerful example writing these words while stuck in prison. He cares more about helping the young church in Philippi than relief from his own circumstances.
IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
Last week, in part one of this message, Senior Pastor Jeff Manion challenged us to memorize the words of Philippians 2:3–4 to use as we engage potentially difficult and challenging people or circumstances. Today, turn to page 26 in your Philippians: Choosing Joy Under Pressure journal and write down those words as your prayer. Ask God for the opportunity and courage to act selflessly, humbly and generously.
