TODAY’S MESSAGE

The church in Philippi is struggling. The church is beginning to lose its unity as it suffers economically and socially. Paul recognizes the gospel is at stake in the community. He writes to them, “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” (Philippians 1:27). It irreparably harms the spread of the gospel when the people in the church can’t rise above their differences and social pressures by treating each other well. The Christians in Philippi were carrying the reputation of Jesus and his gospel and Paul wants them to be known for having a 5-star reputation.

Paul understands the importance of the Philippians as they represent Jesus to their community. He offers examples of how to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel. Paul helps them see what this life should look like using the example of Timothy and Epaphroditus. This past weekend, Student Ministries Pastor Aaron Buer walked us through four characteristics seen in the lives of Timothy, Epaphroditus and Paul. A faithful follower of Jesus should care, be intentional, be willing to risk and be selfless.

The spread of the gospel in Philippi was tied to the actions and character of the followers of Jesus in that community. It’s the same way for us today. Our reputation matters. God has entrusted us with his message, and we need to live in a manner worthy of the gospel.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

As you spend time in the Chair today, consider who modeled Jesus to you in a season when you experienced spiritual growth. On page 34 in your Philippians: Choosing Joy Under Pressure journal, write down some of the character traits they exhibited. Offer a prayer of thanks for God using them to work in your life.
