But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. Philippians 2:22

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Paul says Timothy “proved himself.” Timothy proved himself through his faithful, intentional service to move the gospel forward. This wasn’t just a few months of service. It was a day after day, month after month, year after year kind of service. Timothy’s service wasn’t just a flash in the pan, and it wasn’t just to get him where he wanted to go. By this time, Timothy wasn’t a nobody. He co-authored New Testament letters with Paul and would go on to become the pastor in Ephesus, one of the most important churches in that era. He was well-known with a network of contacts. Yet, here he is intentionally serving Paul so the Jesus message continues to move forward. Timothy’s service showed he understood it wasn’t about him, but about the spread of the gospel.

If we want the gospel to spread, we need to realize life isn’t about us. Timothy got this. When we intentionally serve, we model what it looks like to follow Jesus. As Student Ministries Pastor Aaron Buer reminds us in the video clip below from the weekend service, we need to be intentional about finding places in our life to move the gospel forward.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Today, consider the role of intentional service in your life. Timothy was known for his service and he provides a great example. He used his God-given skills and talents to advance the gospel. We should want to do the same. His service was faithful and intentional. Perhaps the next step in your spiritual journey is to begin to faithfully and intentionally serve.
