Beyond the Weekend

December 20 | God of Peace

December 20, 2017

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Read: Isaiah 9:6

Listen: Isaiah 9

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Isaiah wrote the verse for today to a group of people with good reason to be worried and anxious. The people of Israel were entering a season of war, destruction and darkness. Isaiah knew they would wonder if God had turned his back on them. He understood there would be moments when the Israelites would question God’s concern for their well-being.

Often read at Christmas, this powerful passage speaks to God’s desire to bring peace to chaos. Isaiah is foreshadowing the arrival of our Prince of Peace—Jesus. The infant Jesus lying in the manger testifies that God cares, is concerned and has sent help. Isaiah recognized that peace could only be cultivated where there is hope. He knew the people of Israel would only survive their difficult circumstances if they were convinced God was able to help.

Paul writes to a similar audience several centuries later. The Philippian church is attempting to build healthy marriages, parent skillfully, spend wisely, honor their employers and engage the daily challenges of life. Just like us, they encountered sickness, failed relationships, runaway kids and broken dreams.

Paul reminds this fledgling church that God is very interested in entering their chaos to bring peace. They might not experience physical healing, wealth or get everything they want. However, the power of Jesus being our Prince of Peace is knowing him and eagerly looking forward to when he fully restores our broken world.
