January 30 | Disorganization

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 1 Corinthians 16:2.

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Generosity starts with planning. It is impossible to become a radically generous person by trying to give out of what is left at the end of the month. Disorganization is one competition we regularly face in practicing radical generosity. We must make generosity a priority in our lives and plan to give.

Some of the first Christians in Corinth received similar coaching from the Apostle Paul. His advice is simple and sound—set aside weekly what you’d like to give so it doesn’t overwhelm you later.

One way we can take a bold step forward is by making a plan to give. As Senior Pastor Jeff Manion has said, we need to “know and grow.” Chart your spending—know where your money is going and how much you’re giving away. Then take one step forward to grow. The pathway to becoming a radically generous person is taken one step at a time.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

There are a number of steps you could take to improve your generosity plan. Perhaps it is charting your spending or creating a budget. Perhaps it is sitting down with your spouse or family and determining how much you’d like to give or set up automatic giving online. One powerful tool that can help you through this process is the study Balanced. It can be experienced as a small group, with a friend or a spouse. Balanced workbooks are available here. Whatever your plan—do it. Ask God to give you strength and courage to see it through.
