TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. Exodus 20:17

Read: Exodus 20:17

Listen: Exodus 20

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Today’s verse is one of the Ten Commandments. The word “covet” simply means “desire” or “strong craving.” It is a feeling of, “I have to have that.” We all go through seasons where our desires drift to what someone else has—something we think will fill us up if we get it. Whether it’s a new home, a better job or upgraded relationships, our desire for more leaves us unhappy and often resentful of those around us.

Generosity at its core comes from a sense of fullness. God gave to us out of the fullness of himself. As we’ve seen in our series The Grace Effect, God gives to us so we can give to others.

One challenge to contentment is social media. We see people in their best moments with their favorite people. Spending mindless time on social media can invite “cravings” and “desires” for the God’s blessings to others. The solution is to be grateful for the goodness God has given to both you and them.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Take a moment to confess to God any desires you have that are causing you to resent him or others. You might pray something like, “Dear God, in my heart I’ve secretly thought I needed _________ to be happy. I’ve watched as others have experienced this and I’ve not trusted you. Please forgive me and help me to be satisfied in you alone. Thank you for all of the goodness you’ve placed in my life. Help me to celebrate the goodness you’ve placed in the lives of others too. Amen.”
