TODAY’S MESSAGE

We can choose to be builders with our words. Builders use many different tools to construct a house, and we have different types of words for different situations. We can use our words to comfort, encourage and bless. Jesus models the wise use of words in John 11. Jesus’ friend, Lazarus, has died. His sisters, Mary and Martha, had sent for Jesus and were now mourning. When Jesus arrives, they both come out to greet him. Jesus reminds Martha of who he is. When Mary comes out, he weeps. He gives Martha the comfort of truth and Mary the comfort of tears. He wisely discerns what they both need.

Jesus not only provides comfort, but he also encouraged others and pronounced blessings. These types of words can make a significant impact in the lives of those in our circles. Words of comfort can be used by God to bring people through times of great sadness. Words of encouragement recognize the good movement in other people and verbally call it out. Words of blessing allow us to speak into the lives of others as they deal with the circumstances of life. Words of comfort, encouragement and blessing help us be gift givers.

Giving the gift of generous words is just one way we can make a difference in the world. There are many chances to be generous with our words. We can practice these gifts when we help in our child’s classroom or sit hooked up to the dialysis machine. We can be generous when we are on a business trip or playing the tuba in the marching band. No matter where we are, God can use our words to change lives.
