TODAY’S MESSAGE

“God’s chosen people” begins with this family. Through this unlikely family of deceivers, schemers and eavesdroppers, God decides that “all peoples on earth will be blessed” through them (Genesis 12:3b). It is almost as if he couldn’t have picked a more undeserving group through whom to save the world. But there they are, “Abraham…Isaac…Jacob,” listed prominently in Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:2). It is almost as if God wanted to convince us he’s in the business of using radically flawed people to accomplish his plan.

The Bible is filled with stories of how God uses the humble and obedient. But its pages also overflow with how he uses people who don’t earn it and don’t deserve it. People like Isaac, Jacob, Esau and Rebekah. Those who worship idols, disregard God’s commands and habitually lie and steal. For some reason, God is pleased to pursue and work in the lives of the radically flawed. Maybe that’s why it’s called “grace.”

“Radically flawed” probably describes all our families at one time or another. Maybe that time for your family is right now. If so, take heart in knowing that God’s plan is bigger than the perfection of your family.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Remind yourself that God is pleased to work in and through your flawed family—as difficult as that might seem! Things are never beyond hope. Pray, specifically and by name, for family members who are in challenging situations. Especially pray for those who are there because of poor choices they’ve made.
