TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Read: Genesis 33

Listen: Genesis 33

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. God often uses this phrase to describe himself in the Old Testament. He was a God of relationship, not a God who ruled a location.

In our story from this week, Jacob’s relationship with God shifts. God goes from the God of Isaac (Genesis 27:20) to the God of Jacob (Genesis 33:20).

Jacob had a spiritual heritage, but he finally makes the shift to a personal relationship. God becomes his God.

It’s not enough to have a spiritual heritage. It’s not enough to attend church. Just like Jacob made the shift to a relationship, we need to make that shift in our life. God needs to move from being the God of our mom or dad, the God of our friend or the God of our co-worker—to be our God.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Jacob worships God at Schechem like his grandfather Abraham. Spend some time worshipping God today. Listen to the song we sang in the weekend services, “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)” by Matt Redman. May the song lyrics, “Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, let me be singing when the evening comes,” be your heart’s prayer today as you grow in your trust of God.
