TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jacob and Joseph both have lives filled with major trials. But they end up with vastly different hearts. In the end, Joseph is able to say, “God allowed these trials for my good.” Jacob is only filled with bitterness and despair. In fact, he exclaims, “Everything is against me!” (Genesis 42:36)

To be sure, Jacob had suffered very difficult experiences: the loss of a son, the death of a wife, and the potential loss of two more sons. But he fails to recognize how God might choose to use these trials.

First, it’s important to acknowledge that the trials we walk through, just like Jacob and Joseph, are very real. We all navigate extremely difficult experiences: the loved one’s unexpected death, abuse, job loss, terminal illness or wayward children. These are terribly painful experiences, often with permanent consequences.

But second, remember that God is with us through even our most terrible moments. It is his presence and capacity to work in, through and around our situation that gives us hope. God is with us, and he is able to use our tears to bring about something beautiful.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

One of the ways we ground ourselves in our relationship with God is by remaining in meaningful community. Today, if you’re feeling forgotten by God or like the whole world is against you, seek out a godly friend who will encourage you and speak truth into your life. On the other hand, perhaps you know a friend who could use a voice of encouragement. Reach out today and remind them they are not alone.
