July 3 | My Plans are Unpredictable

July 3, 2018

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

You do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. James 4:14

Read: James 4:13-14

Listen: James 4

TODAY’S MESSAGE

James reminds his listeners that earthly plans are unpredictable when he uses the familiar example of the morning mist that quickly evaporates. If he were writing today, he might use the analogy of a “high and tight” fastball in baseball. Like a batter who’s now dusting himself off, this should get our attention.

This warning includes things big and small. On any given day you may lose your car keys, hit every red light, or get thrown-up on by the baby as you rush to an important meeting. Your plans for the day do not dictate how your day will unfold—any more than your plans for life. But the way you respond is up to you.

We don’t know the future. But God’s vision hovers over our life seeing the beginning, middle and end of every day. He sees the changes coming, but he never changes (Hebrews 13:8). His plans are rock solid, and his promises never fail (James 1:17). God is the boss of all plans, and “our times are in his hands” Psalm 31:15a). Believing this will affect the way you respond to all unexpected changes in your plans—both large and small.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

If during the day, a pitch on the inside corner gets you upset and angry—you certainly won’t be ready for the high and tight fastballs of life. Lay your heart before God and examine where it goes when things don’t go your way. Choosing to trust God when sudden changes happen is a habit you need to develop.
