Beyond the Weekend

July 4 | My Plans are Unsatisfying

July 4, 2018

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. Ecclesiastes 1:14

Read: Ecclesiastes 1:14

Listen: Ecclesiastes 1

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Solomon tells us a life lived for “self” is meaningless because God has made us eternal, and “set eternity in our hearts” (Ecclesiastes 3:11b). Because life here is short, James warns us not to spend it making our own selfish (and Godless) plans. Plans for the best job, the perfect spouse and a life of having bigger and better things will always be full of unexpected changes and loss. It will never be satisfying because our heart longs for what we can never lose—the eternal.

The world is pulling us toward more and more things that will satisfy us less and less. But God longs for us to put him in the center of our plans and make his purpose our purpose.

In our sermon this week, James tells his readers we are created for something larger than what earthly life and plans have to offer. Jesus said it like this, “I have come that [you] may have life and have it to the full…. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:10b, John 10:27). God offers us a life through Jesus that is eternal, full and rich. But that life hinges on hearing his voice and following his lead.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Watch the video clip below as Pastor Bob King explains our plans are unsatisfying if we don’t seek to plan according to God’s will. Thank God for his plans for us to have “life to the full” as we seek to plan according to his will.
