TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18

Read: Proverbs 12:18

Listen: Proverbs 12

TODAY’S MESSAGE

In James 3:2b, James tells his readers, “Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.” James makes a bold claim to emphasize the importance of the tongue. James is likely drawing upon the references to the tongue in the Hebrew wisdom literature in Proverbs 12:18. He wants to help his readers see that if they can control their words—if they can stop arguing and bickering—they can use their words for good.

Our words can be an incredible force for good in the world. We can bless our spouse, encourage our children, build up those in leadership and notice the overlooked in our culture. Think of the impact we could make if we make these actions a part of our daily routine—a part of who we are. If we unleash our speech for good, relationships should change. We should become better people. As our speech changes, our heart will be changing (see Luke 6:45).

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Remember your words can be powerful. Challenge yourself to use your words to uplift and encourage those around you. Think through the people you see regularly. These may be your spouse, children, parents, cousins, friends, teammates, coworkers or the barista at Starbucks. How can you bless or encourage them with your words? Challenge yourself to bless and encourage five people today.
