Beyond the Weekend

July 25 | Recognize God’s Goodness

July 25, 2018

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“…  [God] has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons…he fills your hearts with joy.” Acts 14:17

Read: James 5:7c

Listen: James 5

TODAY’S MESSAGE

James encourages us in the midst of hard times to look forward with hope to when Jesus returns (James 5:7). We might be thinking, “That day seems so far away! What about now?” James continues his farming example by saying the farmer is “patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.”

In the Bible, rain is often a metaphor for God’s blessings and goodness because the rains grow the crops that give life. Even though there were droughts, rain always followed the dryness. God’s kindness and goodness were seen in the rain.

When tough times hit, James tells us to focus on God’s goodness. It’s not about our circumstances, but what we believe about God’s character. James says to remember God is kind and good. Just like the farmer knows God will send rain, we need to believe that God is at work in our situation and will bring us through.

Last weekend, East Paris Pastor Bob King reminded us that journaling three good things God has done for you every day is a good habit to develop. Remembering his goodness will strengthen you for hard times.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Psalm 145:14-19 is a good reminder of God’s goodness. Grab a notebook, journal or your mobile device and use this passage to help you focus on three good things about God that he has done in your life today. Commit to making this a habit.
