September 14 | Teaching: A Time for Listening

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I say?  Luke 6:46

Read: Luke 6:46

Listen: Luke 6

TODAY’S MESSAGE

In today’s verse, Jesus challenges people who hear his teachings but do not put them into practice. It’s as if Jesus was saying, “You hear me but are you really listening?” He gave them a simple test—those that really listen put into practice what he asks them to do. Pastor Jeff Manion asked us to practice this prayer this week: “I’m listening. Teach me. Restore me.” Watch the video clip below as he talks about listening.

Listening to Jesus and putting his teaching into practice does not come naturally. It takes work and it takes a plan. We talk often about the Row (weekend service), the Circle (small group) and the Chair (time alone with God) as three environments of discipleship. A great place to start listening well to Jesus would be to find ways to grow in your commitment to all three.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Spend some time and develop a plan to help you listen better. Consider making a list of things to do yearly, quarterly, weekly and daily to train yourself to listen well to your Teacher and put his teachings into practice. It could be as simple as yearly make a plan for spiritual growth, quarterly read through the gospels, weekly write down areas of growth God may be calling you to and daily pray, “God help me to really listen to you and follow your teaching.”
