September 19, 2018

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Read: Revelation 21:1-5

Listen: Revelation 21

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jesus heals people who were blind, lame, deaf, and dead. These healings radically changed their lives. The towns and villages of the first century were not handicap accessible. There were no service animals. Their encounter with Jesus restored them. But Jesus didn’t come to earth only to heal people.

Though Jesus came to restore, it is clear he didn’t finish the job. Jesus’ ministry was both for the here, but also for what was coming. His healing ministry previewed what life would be like in the new heaven and new earth. Like a sample in a grocery store—it gave a taste. It should cause us to hunger for more.

When Jesus healed a lame man, restoring his ability to walk and work, it was a “taste” that in the new heaven and new earth everyone will be able to walk and work. There is something in our heart that no matter how pleasant things are on any given day, we believe there should be something better than this. No matter how good life is, there is still something missing. And, no matter how bad it is, there has to be something better to come. We were created with that desire and Jesus’ healing provides a sample of what is to come.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

The healing ministry of Jesus is not the only sample we get of the new heaven and new earth. Other parts of life give us a taste such as good friendship, a beautiful sunset, a fulfilling job or a relaxing meal. What are some samples you have experienced in your life that provide a taste of what is to come when Jesus returns? In your journal, create of list of these samples and thank God for them. At the end of the list, write these three words, “Come Lord Jesus.”
