TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

Read: Proverbs 4:23

Listen: Proverbs 4

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The Bible teaches the heart can be a foul and dark place when left to our own devices. Jesus compares it to a tree capable of bearing good or bad fruit. “Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart…” (Luke 6:44-45). When life gets hard and something ready to drop is “hanging over your head”—it’s important to guard your heart from the dark side.

In his book Dream Big, Think Small, Pastor Jeff Manion states, “God is eager to provide what you could never pull off on your own. He wants to fill you and empower you with himself [the Holy Spirit].”  It’s a true statement that on our own we are incapable of behaving the way God desires. Our disobedience is called sin. What we earn from sinning is death (Romans 6:23). When we accept Jesus and the payment he made for our sin by dying on the cross, we receive forgiveness and the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). The Holy Spirit is God’s power in us to do good (godly) things. But we have to acknowledge our faults and ask for his help. Watch the video clip below as Pastor Jeff Manion explains how the Holy Spirit can change your day.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

As you complete your Focus For The Season journal entry on “filling”, realize how the Holy Spirit can help where your heart is in need. Be aware of your thoughts that resist God, and use the Fruit of the Spirit list to ask him for his power through the day.
