Beyond the Weekend

January 9 | Limit Distractions

January 9, 2019

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35

Read: Mark 1:35

Listen: Mark 1

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jesus found himself a solitary place when he left to pray. He knew that the environment mattered. He may have struggled to focus if he stayed in the house nearby the disciples. His distractions, like teaching and healing, were important but he had to limit himself. Limiting distractions, good or bad, often require sacrifice. Jesus knew he needed to refocus and so he went away alone to pray.

If Jesus needed to limit distractions when he prayed—how much more do we need to do this today?

What can you do to create a good environment with few distractions? If you read your Bible on lunch break at work, maybe you can go out to your car rather than reading in the break room. Perhaps you need to put your phone or laptop in another room while you pray. Or if you have young kids, you can listen to the Bible on audio, spend Chair Time with them or find some other creative way to spend time with God.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Spend a few minutes to consider what things tend to distract you when you are praying or reading the Bible. Then decide how you can limit some of those distractions and write out a plan for creating the best environment for you. Then stick to it!
