TODAY’S MESSAGE
You won’t be remembered. That’s the harsh message of the author of Ecclesiastes in verse 11. Never fear—he isn’t saying all you do has no value. He is saying you and the people who came before and after you simply won’t be remembered. It’s just the way the world works. Think of how many people you can remember who lived more than 500 years ago. Most of us don’t even recognize pictures of past presidents more than 100 years ago.
The word “meaning’ comes from the Hebrew word hebel that translates to vapor or mist. People try to find infinite meaning through temporary achievements, possessions and experiences. But it’s never enough. Those feelings you get when you win the trophy, get an A, or earn a bonus check won’t “do it for you” for the rest of your life. No one else will even remember. Those feelings of validation come and go like the morning vapor that dissipates with the sun.
Our culture tells us we must accomplish something grandiose for our life to have meaning. Jesus followers find meaning not in personal achievements but in using the gifts God has given us to live for him. Instead of worrying about leaving an unforgettable legacy, we are set free to pursue God and his purpose.
IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
Reflect on whether you are ok with not being remembered. Spend some time talking with God about what a proper perspective on life looks like. Is your life focused on achievements or pursuing God and his purpose? Ask him to help you pursue his legacy in your life.
