TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”  2 Kings 6:12b

Read: 2 Kings 6:8-12

Listen: 2 Kings 6

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The king of Aram just couldn’t figure it out. Every time he moved his army, Israel’s army was waiting for him. It didn’t matter how closely he guarded his plans or how quietly the army advanced. Wherever he moved, Israel was waiting for them. Unknown to the Aramean king, God was working to protect his wayward people. The all-knowing, all-present Yahweh would tell Elisha the plans of the Aramean army. As soon as he did, Elisha would tell the king of Israel and the defenses would be made ready. God was protecting his people.

What if God still works this way? He’s probably not going to tell you the plans of an enemy army or how best to repel an invading force. But God still wants to protect his people. In Proverbs 5:3–5, 13:20 and 16:18, God warns us to listen and then take action. After all, it’s for our protection.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Make a commitment to really listen to God and then take action. One way to listen is to regularly read the book of Proverbs. This book is part of the Bible known as “wisdom literature.” Because it’s 31 chapters long, it can often be read in one month by reading one chapter a day. Begin “listening” today by reading the first chapter of Proverbs and writing in your journal one “warning” you can heed today.
