TODAY’S MESSAGE

Elisha poured himself out to help correct the spiritual drift of Israel. He spent a great deal of time traveling the countryside. The hospitality of others was extremely important for him to be able to do the work that God had given him. While several people probably helped him in a variety of ways, one woman in particular went above and beyond. She invited him for a meal with her and her husband—and they built a room for him on top of their home. Little did she know that these gestures of hospitality would be the beginning of a rich and complex story.

This week we will be diving into this story as we see that this story speaks powerfully to us today as well. It demonstrates remarkable hospitality and what it looks like when someone opens their life to God and allows him to work. We will see that God responds to her with blessing, but also with heartache and pain. However, her story doesn’t end with pain. Instead, it ends with restoration. A restoration that gives us a foretaste of Jesus and his future kingdom. This story gives us hope for the future, patience in the present and a window into the character of the God we serve.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Begin with a prayer of openness. Find a quiet place and, with your hands out and palms up, close your eyes and say, “God, help me see you move.” Ask him to stir your heart as you read about Elisha and this woman from Shunem. Ask that he would help you to learn more about who he is and how you can open up your life to him this week.
