May 17, 2019

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

Read: Galatians 2:20

Listen: Galatians 2

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Our identity from our work is a powerful force in American culture. It causes people to work long hours for the big promotion, push themselves to the limit to make the team, and change majors multiple times to get the highest paying career. But the Bible teaches our identity is not ultimately wrapped up in where we work, how high our salary is, or whether we’re known for what we produce. God is the model for how we work—and Jesus gives us our identity.

Everything changes when we accept the saving grace of Christ—we are now a citizen of heaven (Philippians 3:20), indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14), a member of God’s family (Galatians 3:26) with a new identity (Galatians 2:20). Christians are freed by grace to view work as a means of expressing the love and care of God to others as well as receiving his love and care from others. Having a job is still essential, but it doesn’t give us our true identity. We bring our identity in Christ to our work—we don’t find our identity in our work.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Everything in this world that’s not from God is trying its best to define us. Enjoy this video of the song, “You Say” as Lauren Daigle declares, “I believe what you say of me…in you, I find my worth, I find my identity.”
