July 4 | God’s Invitation List

July 4, 2019

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.” Luke 14:15

Read: Luke 14:15-17

Listen: Luke 14

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The verse Luke 14:15 can seem a bit random—almost like it doesn’t quite fit with the narrative. The story Jesus tells at this meal is not only his way of encouraging his listeners to look at their own typical party guest list. It is also a place to talk about the heart of God and the makeup of his invitation list. God’s table is made up of those spiritually poor, blind, crippled and lame. He isn’t afraid of the mess—he even invites messy people in! God’s family is made up of misfits and broken people.

This story of the banquet host is not just about a man looking for guests. This story is our story, and it reveals a great deal about the heart of our heavenly Father. We are the less-than-perfect people around God’s table. God invites us to his table even though we are spiritually poor, blind, crippled and lame. Watch the video clip below as Pastor Jeff Manion unpacks this idea. Many of us need this reminder.

Maybe we have been recently confronted with our brokenness, and we need to remember God invites us to his table. On the other hand, perhaps we have become like the Pharisees in our heart, and we need to remember God invites all to his table. Wherever we are at today—may we be encouraged by our God who includes the misfits and the broken.
