TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jesus said no to glory and power so he could say yes to service and sacrifice. He turned the idea of what makes a person great upside down. In Jesus’ culture, greatness shone on the rich and powerful who could afford to have others serve them. But Jesus said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).  This idea was so radical his disciples balked at the idea of their leader washing their feet.

Serving to be great is also radical in our culture where greatness centers not only on wealth but celebrity. In our “selfie” culture, having the newest technology, most exotic vacation, smart/beautiful/most popular kids, and best promotion makes you the greatest.

Jesus changed everything for Jesus-followers by changing the rules of greatness. To be great in God’s eyes, we need to say no to the things that pull us away from serving him and others and say yes to the things that allow him to work through us to build his Kingdom. When we say no to pride and yes to humble service, we are freed to live like Jesus.
