TODAY’S MESSAGE
The Power of Words sermon series has taught us the book of Proverbs reveals God’s wisdom for everyday life and how desperately we need his help. The author, King Solomon, reminds us our own understanding of life is not enough. Unless we trust and depend on God, our words and lives will follow an unfruitful and even dangerous path.
Solomon’s advice is especially relevant today. We are pounded daily with advice on how to live, think, relate and be a good person through the many voices of television and social media. By contrast, Proverbs gives us truth we can rely on that’s grounded in God’s Word.
Through this sermon series, we have learned not to use empty words, but to follow through with promises and get to work on the things we talk about (Proverbs 25:14). Our words need to be thoughtful. Before speaking, ask yourself if what you are about to say is humble, kind, necessary and helpful (Proverbs 15:28). Gossip should be avoided as an unnecessary evil that destroys lives and relationships (Proverbs 26:20-21). Instead, our words should be encouraging, gentle and wise—given at the right time (Proverbs 15:23).
