Beyond the Weekend

September 26 | Wounded Healers

September 26, 2019

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition. 1 Thessalonians 2:2

Read: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12

Listen: 1 Thessalonians 2

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Still bleeding and sore from a beating in Philippi, Paul and Silas trek 94 miles with Timothy and Luke to Thessalonica. They arrive as wounded healers who still worship Christ and serve others. Relying on the help of God, they keep preaching the good news in the face of opposition while developing deep and tender relationships with those who believe.

Many of us experience hardships and painful setbacks. The emotional beating of a broken relationship, lost job, abusive childhood or poor church experience can be just as devastating as a physical beating. We often use pain as an excuse not to serve others. With Paul and Silas, there are no excuses. They are the walking wounded who continue the mission in spite of overwhelming challenges.

Why didn’t they just back away? Paul gives a simple answer, “With the help of our God,” they find strength for the journey. In Thessalonica, they lead a diverse group of people to Christ who become as dear to them as children. When hurting people serve, God uses them in powerful ways. Watch this video clip as Pastor Jeff Manion shares how a wounded healer ministered to him.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Everyone experiences pain. Yet, we’re all called to serve. Commit to move forward. Ask God for his strength and start serving. It could begin with taking a meal to someone who’s sick, then proceed to volunteer in ministry (like Discovery Village). Your healing progress can help determine when and where you serve. Visit adabible.org/serving for ideas of where to step in to serve in our church or community.
