Beyond the Weekend

November 11 | A Bad Report

November 11, 2019

Join us as we focus each day for nine weeks on a different part of 1 Corinthians 13.
Monday: Love is patient, love is kind.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this. 1 Corinthians 5:3

Read: 1 Corinthians 5

Listen: 1 Corinthians 5

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The church in Corinth was full of new believers in a city influenced heavily by the temple to Aphrodite. This temple was known for its practice of temple prostitution; the city was no stranger to scandalous behavior. Paul writes to this church to address a specific scandal. It appears that a man from the church was having an inappropriate relationship with his stepmom.

Paul is deeply concerned both about what is best for the man involved and for the church. He wants the man to be restored to God and wants the church to flourish. He gives them pretty direct instructions that are hard for them to hear then, and hard for us now.

This story has significant connections to our culture today. By looking at this challenging passage, we can consider how our decisions impact the church and see how we should treat others. We can learn a lot from Paul as he works toward unity, holiness, and restoration for this young church.
