November 27, 2019

Join us as we focus each day for nine weeks on a different part of 1 Corinthians 13.
Wednesday: It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 1 Corinthians 9:22b

Read: 1 Corinthians 9:12-23

Listen: 1 Corinthians 9

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Paul chose to work. It wasn’t by far the easiest path. He did manual labor during the day, then talked to people about Jesus the rest of the time. He tried to do two full-time jobs. He didn’t want taking money from someone in Corinth to be a roadblock for someone else coming to know Jesus. In fact, he wanted people to know Jesus so badly that he tried to remove all roadblocks by relating to people where they were (1 Corinthians 9:19-23). Instead of demanding his rights and making people listen to him on his terms, he went to them on their terms. Why did he do this? He asked himself, “What is the most beneficial lifestyle to draw people to Jesus?” He writes, “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some” (1 Corinthians 9:22b).

When we give up our rights, we have the opportunity to show people the character and person of Jesus.

Consider a family hosting a sleepover for friends of their 4th-grade daughter. When the husband and wife treat each other with love and respect, it creates an aroma of peace almost intoxicating to those young girls who may have a drastically different home life. It happens at work too. When a Christian begins to interact with their team differently by setting aside the right to get even or have everything done their way, people start to notice.

Watch this video clip as Pastor Jeff Manion tells us—it matters in the church. The way we treat people matters.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Memorize 1 Corinthians 9:12b, “But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.” Write it on a card somewhere that you will see it regularly. Reflect on it today during your lunch break, in the afternoon and before you go to bed.
