Read: 1 Corinthians 11:17-34

Listen: 1 Corinthians 11

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Celebration of the Lord’s Supper, in conjunction with a community meal, was a regular part of worship in the early church. This wasn’t just about sharing a meal. It was about who shared the meal and what it represented. The scene would cause people to stop in shock—social somebodies sharing food with social nobodies. Slaves and owners. The wealthy and the poor. People who wouldn’t acknowledge each other in the marketplace now serve each other at the table because of Christ. This Jesus-meal was like a billboard advertising the humility, wholeness and healing Jesus provides through his death and resurrection.

Our world sees the wonder of Christ when Jesus-followers from all backgrounds and economic situations stand together and serve as one. We bring his healing when we provide aid in natural disasters. We showcase his wholeness when a small group serves a new family in the community as they grapple with a child’s illness. We give his hope when we support neighbors in times of need.

This week we will discover serious problems with the Corinthians’ gatherings and celebrations of the Lord’s Supper. What should have been a billboard for unity had instead brought deep divisions. As we study the stern warnings Paul issued the Corinthians, we will understand how living the “Culture of the Cross” is as essential for us as it was for them.
