TODAY’S MESSAGE

Paul’s letter to the Jesus-community in Corinth is coming to a close. To a church fully immersed in the culture of Corinth, Paul is leaving no issue untouched: unity, sexual immorality, to eat or not eat food sacrificed to idols and the Lord’s Supper. In clear terms, he tells them how they should live. But Paul is not entirely done. Before he ends the letter, he has one more issue to discuss—their generosity.

Paul reminds the Corinthians that part of their new identity as a Jesus-follower is a life of radical generosity. The poor in the church in Jerusalem are in severe financial need, and the Corinthian church can help. By telling them how to help, Paul reminds them that the why behind helping is they owe their spiritual lives to the church in Jerusalem.

Paul’s final instructions to the church in Corinth challenges us to be more like the people we want to be, and the people God is calling us to be. This week, we’ll see why giving matters and a plan to get started. Whether we’re “stuck” in this area or desire to grow more, this last teaching of Paul for the Corinthian believers can move us toward greater giving and a heart of radical generosity.
