Beyond the Weekend

December 19 | Culture of the Cross

December 19, 2019

Join us as we focus each day this week on a different part of 1 Corinthians 13.
Thursday: It is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Read: 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Listen: 1 Corinthians 16

TODAY’S MESSAGE

1 Corinthians is Paul’s first attempt to correct the spirit of arrogance and self-superiority he heard existed in this brand-new Jesus-community. As he concludes the letter, he reminds them that their Savior is all about humility, sacrifice, love and servanthood.

To help, Paul gives a brief, final challenge of four significant commands. He tells them to “be on guard” like sentries, watching for anything in opposition to what God desires. He wants them to “stand firm in the faith” by resisting the pull of their culture and old way of living. “Be courageous and strong” by continuing to walk away from selfish and destructive patterns of living. Most importantly was to “do everything in love.” Not just any love, but a sacrificial love that put others before themselves.

We think Culture of the Cross has been a pivotal series for our church. Through his Spirit, God has been growing and shaping us as we embrace the culture of the cross. As our series ends this week, our pursuit of this must not. What we’ve experienced is just the beginning of a life-long journey.
