December 30 | Your Great Work

December 30, 2019

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” Nehemiah 6:3 ESV

Read: Nehemiah 6:1-16

Listen: Nehemiah 6

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Nehemiah is living during a particularly difficult time in Israelite history. Israel was conquered and enslaved for many years. At one point, Nehemiah is granted a trip with other exiles to pick up the pieces of the once-great city of Jerusalem. He decides to start by rebuilding the wall. He calls this task a “great work.”

This week, we are reflecting on the life of Nehemiah and specifically his great work of rebuilding the wall. As this story challenges us, we’ll identify the “great work” each of us has to do. We all have so many things we could do, maybe even should do, but there is likely at least one thing we each have to do this year. This work will bring glory to God and bless those around us.

For some of us, we may need to add something new to our lives. For others, it may be focusing on things already in it. It could be serving at a non-profit organization. It may be restoring our marriage, raising our kids, or finally tackling the mess in our finances. The way Nehemiah goes about his great work gives us a model for our “great work” as we overcome obstacles along the way. Each of us has great work to do this next year and ought to expect distractions, fear, hurt and help, just like Nehemiah.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Begin writing down ideas about what “great work” God may be inviting you into this year. If you are struggling, think about your key roles or things you’re passionate about.
