…but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2b

Read: Romans 12:1-2

Listen: Romans 12

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Our minds can be our worst enemy. It’s the place where sin and disobedience start. Thoughts like getting revenge, taking what we want, making others bend to our will, and destroying people who hurt us or get in our way. It’s no wonder Paul told early Christians in Corinth, “We are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). Our thoughts must be renewed by God’s Word to help us resist the many temptations to disobey him.

This reality is why Chair Time so important. It’s an opportunity to get into God’s Word, listen to him and know who he is. We can’t know what we don’t know. To renew our mind, we must consistently be in God’s Word, reading, studying and memorizing it. The Holy Spirit will use it to transform us into Christ-likeness as we let his Word sink deeply into our hearts.

Memorizing Jeremiah 31:3a is an example of renewing our minds. “I [God] have loved you with an everlasting love.” As this verse permeates our minds, we can realize we will never be more loved by God than we are right now. Knowing this can turn away thoughts of rejection, comparison, inadequacy, anger and unworthiness. Knowing God loves us—no matter what—should affect every aspect of our lives.
