Read: Genesis 14

Listen: Genesis 14

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Abram leaves home to follow God and finds himself caught up in a war between nine kings (click this link to listen as the narrator navigates the pronunciation of these kings and their territories). When the city of Sodom is besieged, his nephew Lot is carried away. Getting wind of the capture, he pursues the armies with his armed and trained servants. Ultimately, he successfully brings back Lot, the stolen goods, the women and other people of Sodom.

What Abram does next is the result of a growth spurt in his faith. Instead of claiming the bounty, he gives one-tenth to God at the altar of Melchizedek and the rest to the King of Sodom. Abrams’ oath to keep nothing results in God receiving the glory for Abram’s prosperity. This kind of generosity flows from Abram’s trust in God—the source of life—to keep his promises and provide. He doesn’t trust in the wealth of the land or the king.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Seek to cultivate a spirit of trust in your own life that endures through the difficult times and not forgotten in the good times. Begin by memorizing Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Write it on a sticky note or type in your phone and let it sink into your heart.
