February 26 | Abraham’s Trust

February 26, 2020

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. Genesis 22:8

Read: Genesis 22:1-6

Listen: Genesis 22

God’s request for Abraham to sacrifice his son shocks us. Yet human sacrifice was ritual in Abraham’s pagan hometown of Ur. Abraham trusts God would not demand what the gods of his past would. Through this test, God proves to Abraham that he is unlike any other god. Abraham proves to God and himself how his faith has matured. Abraham trusts God’s provision for his immediate need and for the long-term, global blessing that would come through Isaac. His trust runs so deep he even believes God could raise Isaac from the dead if it came to that (Hebrews 11:17-19).

Life will be filled with trials and tests. We will walk through painful situations that make no sense. A healthy loved one receives a devastating diagnosis. A child walks away from God. A relationship implodes. A move requires us to start over. We may never fully understand why some things happen.

When situations test our faith, we have a choice. We can choose to move forward in trust and believe God’s promises. Or we can try to control the situation and make our own way. James 1:2-4 reminds us trials and tests of our faith can produce perseverance, making us “mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Spend time in prayer with open hands. Ask God to help you trust him and for his strength to persevere in the midst of trials and tests.
