March 20 | The Rejected Stone

March 20, 2020

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ’The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.’ Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.” Matthew 21:42-44

Read: Matthew 21:40-46

Listen: Matthew 21

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Furious wouldn’t even begin to describe what the religious leaders were feeling. Even Jesus’ question, “Have you never read in the Scriptures…” was a stinging rebuke in the face of people who prided themselves on their Jewish Scriptures knowledge. Jesus was the “building material” they rejected as no good and inferior. He was soon to be the cornerstone of a new “building.” God is taking the leadership of his kingdom away from these chief priests and elders and building something new through Jesus and his disciples.

Three days later, the furious religious leaders thought this whole “Jesus thing” was finally over. Jesus was dead, sealed in a tomb and guarded by Roman soldiers. But Friday leads to Sunday. Passover leads to Pentecost. Twelve becomes 3,000. Jerusalem moves to “the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). It’s not over. It’s just beginning.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

The “building” Jesus was talking about is the church community. It’s every single Jesus-follower all through the ages, from the start at Pentecost to us here at Ada Bible in 2020. As you watch “Great Are You Lord” by All Sons and Daughters, thank God for his goodness in so many ways. Thank him for Jesus and his church!
