April 2, 2020

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Boaz gave orders to his men, “Let [Ruth] gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her.  Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up…”  Ruth 2:15-16

Read: Ruth 2:4-23

Listen: Ruth 2

TODAY’S MESSAGE

All of Bethlehem is talking about Naomi and the Moabite daughter-in-law who has chosen to stick with her. When Boaz finds out Ruth is gleaning in his field, he steps forward to help. Because he’s focused on God and his abundant gifts, he goes above and beyond Jewish law that says farmers should let the destitute glean what the pickers leave behind (Leviticus 19:9-10). Boaz sees a critical need, orders stalks of grain to be left behind, offers protection, speaks kindly and invites Ruth to share their water and food.

Boaz uses his position of strength for generosity and compassion. Pastor Jeff Manion suggests there will come a time in this crisis when we will need to go above and beyond for those who are decimated by losing their business, job, or ability to meet basic needs. What Boaz does for Naomi and Ruth will cut in on his bottom line. He does it because he gets to—not because he has to. Watch this video clip as Pastor Jeff Manion shares what he is learning about generosity.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Begin praying now, “God show me what I have that will help those gravely affected by COVID-19. Help me to trust you and let go of what belongs to you anyway. Give me your eyes and heart to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Amen.”
