May 6 | Obedience

May 6, 2020

#AdaWisdomChallenge

READ Proverbs 6 (listen). WRITE out one verse and SHARE with someone.

Proverbs 6 is part of the nine lessons that open the book (Proverbs 1-9). It continues the seventh lesson from the previous chapter on folly. The chapter concludes with the eighth lesson in verses 20-35, returning to adultery and the ruin it brings.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him. Deuteronomy 10:12a

Read: Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Listen: Deuteronomy 10

TODAY’S MESSAGE

God raises up the nation of Israel to be his people, to represent him to a lost world that needs to believe there is a real (not imaginary) God (Acts 3:25). He has a special relationship with his people, and his special name, Yahweh (translated LORD, all caps), is not uttered out of reverence to his holy (perfect) character.

Obedience to his laws demonstrates this special relationship and gives Israel protection (see Leviticus 11:44-45). Their obedience is a response of deep respect to God’s love and care. Solomon teaches us obedience should be a heart response that says, “I value and respect you so much, I will obey you.” It is the prerequisite of wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6). Watch the video clip below as Teaching Pastor Aaron Buer explains how respect and awe of the Lord is expressed through obedience.

For those who have accepted Christ as their Savior, obedience is the same deeply respectful act of worship.  It is the believer saying, “I will obey someone who loves me enough to die for me.”

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

God tells us to obey because he wants the best for us. Choose an area of your life you’re struggling with right now. Then pray, “Father, I confess I have difficulty obeying you when I_____________________.  I believe Jesus died for this, and I thank you for your forgiveness. Fill me with your power and help me obey you.  Amen.”
