TODAY’S MESSAGE
In Jewish culture, adultery had terrible consequences. It ruined families and communities and was punishable by death. It transmitted disease, brought unwanted children and was a blight on the reputation of God’s people. Solomon continually repeats the dangers of adultery to his son, so he won’t ignore the dangerous consequences.
It’s unlikely the dangerous destinations pulling at us are punishable by death, but they will cost us something if we continue down an unwise path and ignore the warning signs.
As Pastor Jeff Manion often says, “We get to choose our actions, but not the consequences.” Unwise choices in our marriage, workplace and friends can lead to devastation and destruction over which we have no control. We can suffer in our career, reputation, relationships and even health in ways that can never be recovered.
Another price tag is the effect on our relationship with God. The further off the path of wisdom we stray, the farther we are from God and his blessings.
IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
Recognize that everyone has made mistakes and ventured off God’s path in one way or another. Christ died for our sins, and we are forgiven when we accept this gift. Although he doesn’t take away the consequences, he does allow us to experience his forgiveness (1 John 1:9). Thank him for helping us move forward as we get back on the right path (Romans 15:13).
