Proverbs 19 is part of the proverbs of Solomon (Proverbs 10-22). These proverbs are typically two coupled thoughts, giving instruction on how to live out wisdom in all of life. Proverbs 19 includes themes geared toward someone preparing for civil service, such as discernment, character and work ethic.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

Read: Proverbs 4:23

Listen: Proverbs 4

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Understanding how the world works, King Solomon gives his son timeless advice on protecting his heart. He tells him everything flows from it: every thought, word, and action begins in the heart. Solomon knows if his son doesn’t think guarding his heart is critical, then he is vulnerable to the lure of destructive paths.

“Listen to your heart” is a common saying. The problem with that is our hearts can deceive us into ignoring danger signs. God’s Word, not our heart, should guide us along the right path. Solomon calls it Wisdom.

Pastor Aaron Buer says there are warning signs to watch for when our heart is leaning toward things that aren’t right like pornography, overspending, gossip or substance abuse. When we recognize a warning sign, we need to ask for God’s help and keep asking every time we need to. Watch this video clip as Pastor Aaron explains how trusting in God with all our hearts will keep us on the right path.

Life is hard enough without making bad decisions that will have costly consequences and heavy regret. Trust God and submit to his Truth. Trusting him with all of our hearts is the way of Wisdom.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Give your heart to God and ask him to help you guard it. Memorize Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Write it down and put it somewhere you will see it each day and remember it.
