June 30 | Doing Nothing

June 30, 2020

#AdaWisdomChallenge

READ Proverbs 30 and 31 (listen to 30 and 31). WRITE out one verse and SHARE with someone.

These chapters contain sayings of Agur and King Lemuel, two men we don’t know much about. Agur’s sayings touch on themes like humility, wisdom and wonder. Lemuel’s sayings are things taught to him from his mother, serving as the bookend to the concept of Lady Wisdom from Chapters 1-9. Proverbs 31:10-31 is an acrostic poem using all 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet to personify the full-range of wisdom in the book of Proverbs through the picture of a noble wife.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. Proverbs 24:31

Read: Proverbs 24:30-34

Listen: Proverbs 24

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The author passes a run-down field on his journey. The writer of this story isn’t zipping by at 60 mph. He observes its state of ruin as he walks along. This vineyard is in rough shape with thorns and weeds overtaking a once-fertile ground; the stone wall is crumbling and scattered. Anyone with a yard or garden knows just how quickly weeds can overtake it. All we have to do is nothing. If the vineyard owner wanted a productive field, he would need to take the time to weed and care for it every day.

Sometimes when bad things happen, we say, “I don’t know how this happened, I didn’t do anything.” Too often, the point is we didn’t do anything. There are many reasons not to do anything. It could be laziness, fear, feeling overwhelmed or uncertainty.

Just like the vineyard owner needs to weed and care for his field every day, we need to “weed and take care of” our character, relationships and everything else that’s important. If we desire to grow in gratitude, we must find small ways to practice gratitude daily. If we want to grow in our relationship with God, we need to spend time with him and ask him to help us grow each day. Only good movement can push out bad movement. Inactivity won’t cut it because doing nothing leads to ruin.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Identify a habit you need to continue, revive or begin today. Doing the work of “weeding” in our lives is challenging, and it can be hard to keep momentum. Instead of jumping into this habit alone, enlist someone to help you. Find someone who you can ask to check in on you and your progress regularly.
