July 3 | Not Growing Weary

July 3, 2020

#AdaWisdomChallenge

READ Proverbs 3 (listen). WRITE out one verse and SHARE with someone.

Proverbs 3 is part of the lessons that open the book (Proverbs 1-9). It contains two lessons, both dealing with the value of wisdom. The first lesson addresses God’s promises and the reader’s obligations. The second lesson is presented in three poems, followed by a conclusion.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

Read: Galatians 6:6-10

Listen: Galatians 6

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Paul uses strong words when he says, “Let us not become weary in doing good” (Galatians 6:9a). He’s writing to a young Jesus-community who doesn’t have life easy. Paul encourages them to slow and steady faithfulness. But he also tells them it might not pay off for them in this lifetime.

Instead, Paul reminds them that there is another life to come. He reminds them Jesus came to earth, lived a perfect life, then selflessly died on the cross for their sin (and ours). Accepting his free gift of life means their sins forgiven. They can be assured of spending eternity with God in the new heaven and new earth. That’s what Paul points them to when he encourages this new community to slowly and steadily do the right thing. He knows life isn’t easy, so he encourages them with future hope.

Paul’s words help us see that our actions are important to God. Not because we are earning his favor, but because he died for us. He loves us. Paul’s message rings true as we are called to do the right thing over and over, to keep at it slowly and steadily. There are times we will see our reward in this life for doing the right thing. When that doesn’t happen, we can hold fast to Paul’s encouragement to the Galatians that God will reward us in the next.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Memorize Galatians 6:9. To help you memorize it, using a journal, a notecard or the note app on your phone to write/type the verse ten times. Then read it aloud to yourself ten times around lunch, dinner and bedtime. This promise can be a great reminder to us when we are discouraged or when doing the right thing is hard.
