TODAY’S MESSAGE
Sensing he is losing his son’s attention, King Solomon pleadings with him to pay attention! Solomon wants his son to understand nothing is more important than the heart—the inner self, our thoughts and feelings. Much is at stake and he wants his son to completely understands to pay attention to the source of everything he says, thinks and does—pay attention to his heart.
Later in Proverbs, Solomon says, “As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart” (Proverbs 27:19). This means that a part of our child’s heart reveals itself when using an inappropriate word on the playground. It means our heart shows itself when we offer wise counsel to a struggling friend. And it reveals itself in how we respond, good or bad, to an aggressive driver. We must protect and invest in our hearts.
Paying attention to our hearts helps us to live a God-designed life. It’s also evidence of a life-filled heart through faith and trust in what Jesus did on the cross for us. One of Jesus’ first followers put it this way, “We know that we have come to know him [Jesus] if we keep his commands” (1 John 2:3). Protecting and investing in the source of everything is an essential step to living as God calls us to live.

Reflect on this past weekend. Did you ever ask yourself, “Where did that come from?” Was the condition of your heart reflected in what you thought, said and did? As you look at your heart this week, ask for God’s Spirit to help you be open to some significant changes and the “heart work” necessary to make them.
