Proverbs 15 is part of the proverbs of Solomon (Proverbs 10-22). These proverbs are typically two contrasting lines, giving instruction on how to live out wisdom in all of life. Proverbs 15 includes themes geared toward God’s wisdom, worship and prayer.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29

Read: Ephesians 4:29

Listen: Ephesians 4

TODAY’S MESSAGE

“The tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18b) sounds great. But how do we do it? Fast forward to the New Testament and what Paul writes to Christians in Ephesus, where he started a church. He receives a report these new believers are having problems getting along. He writes a letter of encouragement and answers the question of how to bring healing.

To heal and build up others, we need to move from being self-focused to thinking of others. To avoid speech that is rude, unkind and unwholesome and use speech that is thoughtful, respectful, and helpful. A destructive speaker just talks about himself with little regard for others. The wise speaker listens attentively and asks good questions that show interest in the other person.

Building others up is not something we can do on our own. As Paul tells us, it takes focus and reliance on the leading of God and the power of his Holy Spirit, “…do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is” (Ephesians 5:17).

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Pray, “Father, I don’t want to be a destroyer with my words but a healer and encourager. Instead of just talking about myself, help me listen well to others and learn what will help them. Please give me words that will be a benefit to those who listen. Thank you. Amen.”
